Where they live

Six Places Spiders Live Around an Older Edmonds House

Spider control in Edmonds is mostly about harborage: the undisturbed spots where spiders settle near a steady supply of insects. These are the six we go after on every visit.

Woodpiles against the house

A woodpile on the wall is a spider apartment block next to your siding. We treat around it and will suggest moving it a few feet out.

Old sheds and outbuildings

Quiet, dark and rarely disturbed. We de-web the doorways and eaves and treat the corners where funnel webs build.

Crawl space access and vents

Undisturbed for years on many older homes. We treat the access points so spiders living underneath are not walking up into the house.

Window wells and basement windows

Leaves collect, insects follow, and funnel webs fill the corners. We clear them out and treat the edges.

Ivy and shrubs on the siding

Cover right against the house. We treat the foundation line behind it and point out what to trim.

Porches and eaves

Older Edmonds porches and deep eaves are prime orb-weaver territory in fall. Webs come down by hand, anchors get treated.

The question everyone asks

Funnel Webs and the Hobo Spider Question

Funnel webs in the window well and a big brown spider in the basement send a lot of people looking up hobo spiders. Here is the honest answer, from the arachnologists at Seattle's Burke Museum.

A Funnel Web Does Not Mean a Hobo Spider

Many different spiders build funnel webs, including the grass spiders in your lawn and the giant house spiders in your garage. A funnel web, a chevron pattern or boxing-glove palps are not enough to name the species.

Most Big Brown Ones Are Giant House Spiders

Telling a hobo spider from its look-alikes takes a microscope. What matters more: house spiders pose no significant danger, and we treat funnel weavers the same way whichever one it is.

Questions, answered

Edmonds Spider Control Questions

Is the Spider in My Edmonds Basement a Hobo Spider?

You cannot tell by looking, and neither can we. The Burke Museum in Seattle notes that identifying a hobo spider takes a microscope; patterns, palps and funnel webs are not enough. Most big brown spiders indoors are giant house spiders. The treatment is the same either way, so you do not need to know.

Are Funnel Web Spiders Dangerous?

The funnel weavers in Edmonds homes and yards, giant house spiders and their relatives, are not a significant danger. The Burke Museum says house spiders pose no significant danger to people, children or pets. They are just fast and startling.

Why Does My Older Edmonds House Have So Many Spiders?

Older homes have more of what spiders like: woodpiles, sheds, crawl spaces nobody opens, window wells, ivy and deep porches. Less disturbance and more insects means more spiders. Clearing that harborage does as much good as treatment.

How Much Does Spider Control Cost in Edmonds?

Most spider work is part of a regular exterior program, priced on the size of the house and how much harborage there is to treat. We give you the number before we start.
