Start with the right rodent

Four Rodents Everett Homes Deal With

Rodent control in Everett starts with knowing which one you have, because a roof rat and a deer mouse get into a house in completely different places. Here is how to tell them apart, and where each one usually turns up.

Roof Rats

Attics, soffits, the top of the walls

The climbers. In Everett they travel the big street trees, fences and utility lines and come in at the roofline, so the first sign is usually scratching or running overhead after dark. They are why so much of our Everett rodent work happens on a ladder.

Norway Rats

Crawl spaces, garages, along the foundation

Heavier, and they stay low. They burrow under sheds, woodpiles and slabs and come in through foundation gaps and crawl space vents. Homes near the Snohomish River and the low ground around Lowell and Delta see more of them.

House Mice

Kitchens, garages, wall voids

Small enough to use gaps you would never notice, and they move in hard once the nights get cold. Droppings in a drawer or along the garage wall are usually the first thing people find.

Deer Mice

Sheds, outbuildings, wooded edges

White belly and feet, and more common where a yard backs onto trees or brush. They are the reason we never tell anyone to sweep up droppings in a shed. More on that below.

Where they get in

How Rats Get Into Everett Houses, by Neighborhood

The age of the house decides where we look first. An Everett rat exterminator who checks only the foundation of a 1910 house in Riverside will miss the attic, and one who only checks the attic of a Mariner townhome will miss the shared wall.

North Everett's Older Homes

Riverside, Northwest Everett, Bayside, the Rucker Hill area

Houses from the early 1900s, tall gables, old attic vents and trees that have had a century to grow over the roof. Rats rarely need to chew in here. They use the gaps the house already has, where an old vent screen has rusted out or a branch touches the eave.

South Everett's Ramblers and Split-Levels

Around Evergreen Way, Pinehurst and Casino Road

Many of these are mid-century homes on crawl spaces, with attached garages. The weak points are lower down: crawl space vents with torn screens, the gap under a garage door, and the spot where the dryer vent or a pipe goes through the siding.

Silver Lake, Mariner and the Newer Builds

Townhomes, condos and newer subdivisions

Tighter construction, but shared walls and long runs of utility penetrations. When one unit has mice, the neighbors often do too, so we look at the building, not only the unit that called.

What the first visit looks like

What Happens When You Call Us About Rats in Everett

Someone is out within 48 hours, and you get a text about 30 minutes before the truck pulls up. We start by asking what you have heard and seen, then walk the outside of the house: the roofline, the trees and wires that touch it, the vents, the garage and the crawl space access.

If it is safe to get into, we look in the attic or crawl space for droppings, runways and nesting. By the end of the visit you know which rodent it is, every way in we found, and what it will take to close them, in plain words and with a price.

Sealing comes before trapping, because trapping a house that is still open only makes room for the next rat. Once the house is closed, we trap inside and come back to clear what we catch. The full approach is on our rodent control service page.

If the crawl space has soiled insulation or a torn vapor barrier, we will tell you, and we can handle it as a crawl space cleanout and vapor barrier replacement in the same job. Brian holds WSDA applicator license #112338, and you are welcome to look it up.

Before we get there

Six Things Everett Homeowners Can Do This Week

None of these replace sealing the house, but every one of them takes pressure off it. They matter most in north Everett, where big trees and fruit trees are everywhere. For the garage specifically, see how to keep mice out of the garage.

  • Trim branches back so nothing touches the roof or hangs over it, and pull ivy off the siding.
  • Pick up fallen fruit and bring in bird seed at night. Both feed rats right through fall.
  • Store firewood off the ground and away from the house, not stacked against the wall.
  • Put a tight lid on garbage, recycling and compost, and keep pet food inside.
  • Check the garage door seal and the crawl space vent screens with a flashlight.
  • Write down where you hear noises and when. It tells us a lot before we even open the attic.

A note on cleanup

Don't Sweep Up Mouse Droppings in the Shed

Deer mice carry hantavirus, and the dust from their droppings and nests is how people breathe it in. Here is the safe way to clean up, straight from the state health department.

Hantavirus in Washington

Infected deer mice live throughout the state.

You do not need to touch a mouse to be exposed. Stirring up dust while cleaning droppings or nests is enough, which is why these three are off the table.

  • Don't sweep
  • Don't vacuum
  • Don't touch it bare-handed

Do it this way instead

  1. Put on gloves

Rubber, latex, vinyl or nitrile. A dust mask does not protect you from the virus.

  2. Soak everything with bleach solution

Droppings, nests and any trapped mice. One and a half cups of household bleach to a gallon of water.

  3. Let it sit for 10 minutes

Soaked droppings cannot turn into dust, which is the whole point.

  4. Wipe it up damp, then mop

Pick everything up with a damp towel, then mop or sponge the area with more bleach solution.

  5. Double-bag it and wash up

Bag the waste and the cleaning materials twice, disinfect your gloves before taking them off, then wash your hands.

What Customers Say About Our Rodent Control

"We were in need of immediate local service, since I woke up hearing scratching in my wall. I knew it wasn't good. I am super thankful for the care and concern that was given to me by the owner (who's amazing by the way), very knowledgeable, honest and very fair price. So much so that I dropped Orkin and signed up with these guys due to the low price I got quoted. When the tech showed up, he put me at ease, very knowledgeable young man, and answered all my questions and concerns. By that same night one of the traps that was laid down had caught the little bugger in my wall. I'm thankful for the quick reply and how quickly someone came out to help us. They even came back to retrieve the critter. I appreciate honesty, it's hard to come by these days. So thank you!"

"Brian stopped by to let us know about his eco-friendly pest control services, and we are happy to know we are supporting an eco- and family friendly small business. He is super knowledgeable and uses products that are safe for our pets and kids, and applies them so they won't interfere with our honey bees. We are also going to have chickens in the near future, so we are happy that they (and we) will be protected from rats too. We are fine with bugs being outside where they belong, but very glad we don't have to worry about them being inside!"

Questions, answered

Everett Rodent Control Questions

Is It Rats or Mice in My Everett Attic?

Usually the sound tells you. Rats are heavier, with thumping and running, and the droppings are about half an inch long. Mice are lighter scratching and leave droppings like grains of rice. In north Everett attics under big trees, it is most often roof rats. We confirm it on the first visit, because the plan for each is different.

Why Are Rodents Worse in Everett in the Fall?

Rats and mice spend summer outside, where food is easy. Once the nights cool off and the rain starts, they look for warm, dry shelter, and attics, crawl spaces and garages are the closest thing. That is why fall is when Everett homeowners start hearing them, and why sealing a house before winter pays off.

How Much Does Rodent Control Cost in Everett?

It depends mostly on how many ways in the house has and how much sealing it needs, so we quote after we have looked at the roofline, the crawl space and the garage. The quote includes the return visits to finish trapping. You have the number before any work starts.

How Long Does It Take to Get Rid of Rats?

Once the house is sealed, most Everett jobs wrap up over two or three return visits as we clear the ones still inside. It takes longer when a house has many open gaps or rats are coming in from a neighbor's property, which is why we spend the first visit finding every entry point.

Do You Clean Up Droppings in the Attic or Crawl Space?

Yes. When an attic or crawl space has droppings, soiled insulation or nesting material, we can clean it out, and in a crawl space we usually pair that with new vapor barrier. Do not sweep or vacuum droppings yourself; the state health department explains why below.

Do You Use Poison Inside Everett Homes?

Inside the house we trap rather than bait, so you are not left with one dying inside a wall. Outside, any bait goes in locked, tamper-resistant stations that kids and pets cannot open, and we will walk you through where each one goes before we set it.
