Under Docks, Decks and Boathouses

Paper wasps and yellowjackets like a dry, sheltered underside close to food and water. On a lakefront lot, the undersides of the dock, the deck boards and the boathouse eaves are the first places we check.

In the Ground

Yellowjackets often nest in old rodent burrows in lawns and along beds. The first sign is usually a steady stream of wasps going in and out of one hole, or getting stung while mowing.

In the Trees and Shrubs

The gray, football-shaped nests in the branches are bald-faced hornets. With this many mature trees around town, they turn up in trees and ornamental shrubs close to the house.

Inside a Wall or Soffit

A wasp going into a gap in the siding or the soffit means the nest is in the wall void. Do not plug the hole. Blocked yellowjackets can chew their way inside the house instead.

The Wasp Year Around the Lake

From June through September the colonies grow fast, and by late summer yellowjackets are scavenging food and drinks anywhere people eat outdoors. In fall the workers die off. Only new queens survive the winter, and each one starts a brand-new nest in spring. The full story is in do wasps die in winter?

A nest caught small in April or May is a much easier job than the same colony in August.

How We Remove a Wasp Nest

We find the nest first, which is not always where the wasps are flying. Then we treat it at dusk or dawn, when the colony is inside, with a targeted treatment rather than a spray around the whole house.

After the colony is gone, we treat the void or entry it used, so a new queen does not set up in the same spot next year. Nests inside walls get the same treatment through the entry point. For more, see yellow jacket nests in walls.

Honey bees are never killed. If it is a swarm or a hive, we refer you to a local beekeeper for live relocation. Not sure what you are looking at? Yellow jackets vs. paper wasps vs. honey bees will help.

Questions, answered

Lake Stevens Wasp Nest Questions

Do I Still Need a Wasp Nest Removed This Late in the Year?

Usually not for the nest itself. By late fall the workers die off and only new queens survive, and wasps do not reuse an old nest. What matters is where it was: a nest inside a wall or soffit leaves a void a new queen may move into next spring, and we treat that entry. Our post on whether wasps die in winter covers the season.

How Fast Can You Get Here for a Nest?

Stinging-insect calls get priority, and Lake Stevens is the shortest drive we make from our base here. We treat most nests at dusk or dawn, when the colony is inside, so we will set the visit for the right time of day.

Is It a Wasp, a Yellowjacket or a Honey Bee?

Yellowjackets are bright yellow and black, shiny and fast, and often nest in the ground or in walls. Paper wasps are longer and leggier and build open combs under eaves. Honey bees are fuzzy and brown. We never kill honey bees; we refer swarms and hives to a local beekeeper for live relocation.

What Does Wasp Nest Removal in Lake Stevens Cost?

It depends on the insect, the size of the nest and where it is. A paper wasp nest under an eave is a quick single visit; a large hornet nest high in a tree or a yellowjacket nest inside a wall takes more. You have the number before we start.

Can I Just Spray It Myself?

For a small paper wasp nest you can reach, some people do. For ground nests, nests in walls and big hornet nests, a can of spray at the entrance usually just stirs up the colony. We treat the nest itself at dusk or dawn and then treat the entry so a new colony does not move into the same spot.
