Downtown Snohomish has some of the oldest housing stock in the county, including dozens of pre-1900 homes whose framing has been wicking moisture for over a century. Those beautiful old downtown homes are basically a highway on the inside. Lath-and-plaster walls and balloon framing let a single mouse travel from the basement straight to the attic without ever showing itself, so the trap-in-the-kitchen approach almost never catches up. When the Snohomish River comes up in the wet season, it pushes field mice and river rats out of the floodplain and up toward the homes on higher ground, so the fall rodent season starts a little earlier here than it does inland. The wooded properties out toward Machias and around Blackmans Lake keep spiders and wasps busy on top of all that.
